This is how we do it

Most logo designers have their own unique approach, although the we concur that there are specific steps in the logo design process that are universally followed by professionals like us.

1. Define

We recognize the importance of a discovery phase and brand strategy in our work, emphasizing the need to understand the client’s business, industry, competitors, and target audience. A logo design should not merely prioritize aesthetics but serve a specific business purpose, being a pivotal component in brand communication and aiming for timelessness to prevent frequent redesigns.

Prior to diving into design tools, we brief the client and establish a robust foundation for the creative process. While approaches to the discovery phase vary among designers, we utilize branding questionnaires or informal calls, while we also prefer strategy workshops to gather essential project information.

2. Research

In the second phase of the design process, the focus shifts to gathering and analyzing information acquired during the discovery phase, supplemented by additional research to extract valuable insights for the ideation phase.

Our research encompasses a thorough examination of the industry landscape, visual research, and drawing informed conclusions to understand the context in which the logo will operate. Our primary goal is to ensure that proposed solutions effectively align with the client’s needs and differentiate their brand from competitors. By empathizing with the customer and conducting detailed industry and competitor analyses, we guide creativity and avoid creating logos resembling those of competitors.

Competitive analysis, initiated during strategy sessions with the client, involves further research into competitors’ websites and brand identities to identify strengths and weaknesses, providing a foundation for the subsequent brainstorming phase.

3. Brainstorm

During the brainstorming phase, we develop a strategy for generating logo ideas based on prior discovery and research efforts, aiming to explore diverse design directions to foster creativity.

Central to this phase is finding a look or style that authentically represents the client’s brand persona, utilizing exercises focused on brand personality and tone of voice, alongside the mind map exercise to identify visual representations of key keywords. This culminates in the creation of three distinct mood boards, each capturing strategic insights, which are then reviewed with the client to facilitate discussions and decision-making on the direction to pursue.

These mood boards serve to maintain objectivity and inform the subsequent sketching phase, ensuring designs are rooted in a solid strategic understanding.

4. Sketch

The sketching phase of logo design is where our creativity is unleashed, with thorough preparation allowing for evaluation based on specific criteria.

While some designers prefer digital tools, our hand-drawn sketches using pen and paper are favored for immediate artistic expression. It’s crucial to determine whether a symbol or wordmark is needed; for the client “Bluekuts Barbers,” a unique wordmark and symbol were chosen to convey the brand’s essence effectively.

Despite being time-intensive, we taking breaks to allow ideas to develop subconsciously, leading to fresh perspectives and enhanced effectiveness upon returning to the project.

We carry our sketching tools at all times, as the best ideas often emerge unexpectedly. This phase typically spans several days to generate numerous concepts for digital execution in the next stage.

5. Create

Once a multitude of sketches has been amassed, our next step is to evaluate them against the established strategy and choose the most promising concepts for digital execution.

This involves transforming the sketches into digital form and testing the feasibility of each concept, emphasizing quality over quantity. Establishing criteria for what works for the client is crucial at this stage.

If initial sketches are lacking, iterative cycles between sketching and digital design can yield exciting logo concepts.

We then proceed to create vector graphics, with multiple variations of each idea designed to determine the best option. This phase, which can take days to weeks, involves meticulous adjustments to colors, fonts, spacing, alignment, and more, ensuring visually pleasing results.

We constantly create new copies to allow for easy reversion if needed. Testing various executions is essential to achieve optimal aesthetics, and taking the time to iterate ensures that logo concepts evolve and strengthen.

6. Present

After completing the logo design, our next step involves presenting three strongest brand identity concepts to the client using relevant applications.

We showcase only solutions that truly align with the client’s needs and strategy. Each concept, derived from a disciplined yet creatively open process, revolves around the same strategy.

Relevant applications, such as business cards and book covers, are carefully chosen to demonstrate real-life scenarios. The selection of mockups is based on key marketing initiatives identified in the strategy framework. Iteration between designing the logo and testing it on applications may be necessary to refine the solution.

The viability of each concept can be tested through beautiful mockups. Client feedback may lead to adjustments, ensuring alignment with their preferences and needs.

We understand that logo attachment and meaning develop over time. At this step we may involve making further tweaks or combining elements from different concepts to finalize the logo design.

7. Deliver

Upon receiving approval from the client, we deliver the brand identity package, comprising the logo artwork and a comprehensive style guide.

This package includes versatile logo versions in full color, black, white, and monochrome, saved in various formats suitable for print and digital use.

Commercial fonts used are disclosed for future design endeavors. We understand that a detailed style guide is essential, outlining logo variations and usage guidelines, along with other brand identity elements like color palette, typography, and potentially illustrations or animations.

Depending on the client’s needs and budget, the style guide can range from a basic sheet to a comprehensive brand guideline, and logo animation.

Trust us with your new identity creation...you'll never go wrong!

Because we believe that creating exceptional logos requires deliberate strategic planning, experimentation, learning from mistakes, and refining designs, every element we finally use on your logo, including shape, typography, and color palette, significantly influences your brand perception.

We careful consider each design decision in logo design process, emphasizing the importance of building concepts on a strong strategic foundation alongside creativity and expertise.

Overlooking initial preparation phases is a no-no for us, as it greatly benefit the later stages of the logo design process.
